Thomas asks…Help? Should I study Corporate Finance or Petroleum Engineering? A bit Long?I relate more easily to finance but I think it’s just an easier degree.

I’m certainly not passionate about engineering but I can be interested.

I didn’t do well in the hard sciences in high school but then again I never studied.

Corporate finance: Easy for me (as for most people). I can finish a 4-year degree in 3 years (including one year of internships) and add another year of internships for good measure, graduating with 2X the work experience of my colleagues. And then go for an MBA. But, there are zillions of finance graduates. A job, if I find one (which is hard), would start at around $48,000.

I don’t really know if I have the charisma, persuasiveness and social skills that are essential to make it big in finance as a stock broker, investment banker, hedge fund manager, etc. I’m a loner.

Petroleum engineering: Very difficult and boring if I don’t get really involved from day one. I can finish a 4-year degree in 3 years if I kill myself, but not with internships. It’s not hard to find internships after graduation, though. The subjects would be challenging but I think as long as I attend my lectures and labs and do my coursework I’ll be fine. Jobs are supposedly plenty and a salary can start at $83,000 or more. I even heard of some $100K starting salaries.

I don’t need to be a great people person. I get paid well to do important and specialized work.

With an engineering degree an MBA is still possible, but not the other way around. I can look for a job and do my MBA at the same time — the salary would be enough.

I’m starting college all over again at 22 and I want to make the right choice this time. I want to be a wealthy worker.Brad Perry answers:It sounds like you have done your homework in checking out Corporate Finance and Petroleum Engineering. Your assessment of the course work seems correct, However engineering is more difficult than people realize, and has a very high drop out rate. I faced a similar choice when I was deciding to go to college. My tour in the military was ending I had to decide whether to study business or engineering. I chose engineering. The course work was very difficult and I had to work almost full time to pay the bills. As a result my grades were Cs which places you down the list for getting hired. I did get a job and found engineering is an ok paying job but there is not a good a career path to higher paying management jobs. If I had to do it

It has many responsibilities, such as detoxification which is crucial to healthy living. The toxins that build up in the bloodstream are removed by the liver. Aside from that, the liver also plays a huge role in metabolism. Therefore, it is not functioning at its optimum level, you could be putting on weight. On the other hand, you may even be making it more difficult to lose weight. However, you will be able to lose weight naturally with milk thistle, either on its own or in addition to a diet plan combined with an exercise routine.

ADD? Or could your child simply be suffering the reversible effects of a nutritional deficiency? Studies have shown that mental and physical disorders such as: Depression (including postpartum) Learning difficulties Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Autism Bad moods Chronic inflammation and Visual impairment… …are often due to a lack of Omega-3 fatty acids in the brain and body. It is essential for us to consume these long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids directly to optimize the health of key areas within the body. Omega-3s are comprised of many polyunsaturated fatty acids, including Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA’s), Eicosapentaeonic Acid (EPA’s) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA’s). Omega-3 fatty acids enhance communication between brain cells by making the cell membrane more fluid. Given that every function within our bodies is coordinated by the brain, dramatically improving brain function is immensely beneficial. But that’s certainly not where the health benefits of Omega-3s end. These oils are great to support healthy hair and skin, elevate moods, help with the growth and development of your brain, assist in a healthy pregnancy, increase energy, and regulate blood sugar, to name a just a few. Beginning in pregnancy, Omega-3 deficiency may result in premature birth and its potential neurological complications. Some research has suggested that Omega-3 fatty acids can at the least, prolong pregnancy by a few days and increase birth weights. While pregnant, Omega-3 fatty acids are conveyed from the mother’s blood to the developing fetus by way of the placenta. In the final month of pregnancy, and the initial month of neonatal life, Omega-3 fatty acids are rapidly incorporated into the brain of the newborn. It is essential for mothers to include additional amounts of Omega-3s into their diet during this time. Omega-3 fatty acids continue to be essential to infant brain development after birth, and infants who are breast fed receive higher levels of the important fatty acid. Essential Fatty Acids or EFA’s cannot be produced by the body and we therefore need to get them from alternative sources. There are two ways of meeting your essential fat requirements: one is from the diet, the other is to supplement using concentrated oils. The modern Western diet is unfortunately very low in Omega-3, and therefore most people fall into the category of having to supplement. Many large food manufacturers have also now jumped on this bandwagon, offering everything from bread to ice cream that is fortified with Omega-3. Unfortunately much of this Omega-3 is very low quality to start with, and it is then subjected to heat and manufacturing processes that further decrease its effectiveness. Research has shown that children who do not consume enough Omega-3s, may have a decreased ability to pay attention and control impulsive behavior. There are many studies which suggest that Omega-3 supplementation provides improvement in such things as behavior and academic performance.

Laura asks…What is the difference between an HSA and an HMO?I am a 20-year-old healthy college student. Due to various reasons, I along with most of my peers, do not have health insurance.

I am self-employed and do free-lance work for income. I applied for health insurance with Kaiser and they’ve given me many options to choose from in to forms of plans: HSA or HMO.

Which is the smarter option for someone in my position? I know an HSA is technically just a savings plan where I am paying for my own medical expenses since I don’t have an employer adding funds to my savings, but what happens if I get into a car accident or develop cancer and the bill comes to $10,000+ that I don’t have in my savings plan? And what are the benefits of having an HMO?

My parents don’t even speak English so I’m on my own in trying to understand all this.Travis Bunker answers:This article might help

http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2006/09/29/is-an-hsa-right-for-you.aspx

    * HSAs generally benefit relatively healthy people.
* You can’t have other insurance with your HSA. So if your employer provides health insurance or you are covered by Medicare, this option isn’t for you.
* You can roll over unused contributions and build your savings over time. You can only withdraw money for legitimate health expenses without paying a penalty.Steven asks…I’ve never had health insurance before….?The four plans I have to choose from are…

PPO FlexBLue (HSA)
PPO Option 14
Blue Care Network (HMO) Basic
Blue Care Network (HMO) Deductible 3

I’m 24 and hope to have a baby within the next couple years. Which one do you think would be better and why?Travis Bunker answers:1. Is like a savings acct that is tax deferred
2. You can go to Doc of choice in a wide network
3.Is probably cheaper than PPO but limited to doc choice and if something tragic happened you might have to wait a long time to get it approved
4. I am assuming like HMO Basic except w/ded. Probably the least per month.
If you can afford it go with the PPO option
If not go with the HMO basic if you are in excellent healthJenny asks…My husband thinks I’m holding him back financially…?I’ll keep this short:

My DH and I are young, 25 years old to be exact, with a 7 month-old daughter. We graduated from college about 1.5 years ago. He only just now was able to get a full-time job in his field with decent benefits. (The delay was thanks to the economy.) I started a business working from home and I make around 3K/month. This month will be the first month that we’ve been able all our bills, including student loans, and have a little bit left over at the end of the month.

Now, we’re having other problems. I don’t like to take risks financially when we’ve only just gotten to the point where we can afford to live at all.

He blames me for holding him back, etc. because I wanted to actually sign up for the company’s real health insurance plan instead of an HSA that won’t cover what we need if the baby has an emergency. (It’s a 6k deductible on each of us and we have zero savings.)

He’s barely been at the job for a week, claims he loves it, but he wants to start doing high-risk investment with our extra money instead of using it to pay down our student loans.

I’ve offered to go get a job outside the home, but that would take buying a second car and paying for daycare. Honestly, I’d prefer to build up my business but I’d be willing to go work a normal job if he’d just be happy for once. He doesn’t want me working outside the home, so he’s

John asks…Can a father’s health insurance cover the prenatal care of the mother who is carrying the child & the deliveryMy wife and I are going to try and have a baby over the next year or so. We are covered under separate health insurance plans by our respective employers (she has an HMO, I have a PPO-HSA). There is a local hospital and OB-GYN medical group that is considered to be amongst the best in our area; although her insurance does not include the hospital and medical group in their network, mine does. Can the medical bills for the pre-natal care and delivery be covered under my insurance (considering that it as much my child as it is hers) even though she has her own health insurance that would cover the expenses from a different provider?Travis Bunker answers:The pre-natal care and delivery is care of the MOTHER. Your argument that the kid is yours does not wash as the kid is not a kid until the kid is born.

If YOUR policy is an individual policy only you are covered and she will have to use her own insurance. If that is the case, you might check on “upgrading” to a family policy. However, they may not cover for this pregnancy as she was PG at the time you upgraded.

If YOUR policy is a FAMILY policy and your wife is covered under it, you can use it. It may require her policy to pay first but that is no problem. You just have her policy billed first, they decline to pay then you bill your policy.Ruth asks…Can a father’s health insurance cover the prenatal care of the mother who is carrying the child & the delivery? We are covered under separate health insurance plans by our respective employers (she has an HMO, I have a PPO-HSA). There is a local hospital and OB-GYN medical group that is considered to be amongst the best in our area; although insurance does not include the hospital and medical group in their network, mine does. Can the medical bills for the pre-natal care and delivery be covered under my insurance (considering that it as much my child as it is hers) even though has own health insurance that would cover the expenses from a different provider?
http://handyproxy.cn/health-insurance.htmlTravis Bunker answers:If the father’s insurance is an individual policy (not a family policy) then no, it would not cover the mother’s medical expenses for anything, including prenatal delivery.

On the other hand, if you have a family policy (covering both of you) then she would be covered. I think she can elect to go under your coverage for the preganacy and delivery, even if she has her own coverage, as long as your policy covers both of you.

Your best bet is for you each to check with your respective insurance carriers.George asks…What does this mean? HSA?I am looking for a health insurance plan and one of the plans from BCBS is called: HSA Compatible/HDHP PPO $1150-Ded 100%-Coin. What is HSA? I have been talking to a consultant too. I just don’t know what’s right for me. Out of YOUR opinion who is a really good individual health insurance company?Travis Bunker answers:The acronym “HSA” stands for “Health Savings Account.” Health Savings Account is useful if you have a high deductible health insurance policy. If you don’t than it’s most likely not a good plan for you.Sandy asks…What is a Health Savings Account? And should I start me a 401K?It’s open enrollment at my workplace. I’m 27 with three children. Would either of these benefit my family and I. My children have peachcare, but I don’t have health insurance at the current moment. I’ve been searching for a health care plan at a reasonable rate. Any suggestions? Would the HSA do me any good? What about the 401 K? Please give details. Thanks!Travis Bunker answers:Add up your families medical expenses for the last year and calculate the taxes you paid on that money. That is what your savings would be with a HSA if you spend the same amount in the next year. Be careful though, this is a use it or lose it type deal.
A 401k is a necessity not a luxury for a person your age. If you can’t afford it, start with $20 a paycheck. If you can make larger contributions, put in the maximum your company will match.
With insurance, you could probably wait and see how the new law affects you
